European Technical Education Course

The European Eye Bank Association (EEBA) and the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) present the European Technical Education Course. Facilitated by members of the EEBA, this virtual course provides an overview of the technical aspects of eye banking through on-demand presentations and a live interactive workshop. The on-demand sessions will be released on December 1 and the live session takes place on January 12. 

This course is intended for beginning eye bank professionals and focuses on the practical, technical, scientific, and regulatory aspects of eye banking.

Diego Ponzin, MD

Medical Director and Corneal Consultant

Veneto Eye Bank Foundation

Diego Ponzin, MD is Medical Director and Corneal Consultant of the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation in Venice, Italy. His clinical fields of interest include the ocular surface and corneal diseases and infections, corneal transplantation, cornea biology, storage and selection for transplantation.

He obtained his medical degree at the University of Padua, Italy and his post-doctoral diploma in Ophthalmology at the University of Udine, Italy. He has been Research Associate at the Department of Immunology of the FIDIA Research Laboratories in Padua. Over 25 years of experience in ophthalmology and eye banking he has been: Expert for eye banking of the Consulta Nazionale Trapianti, Rome; Fellow at the Ophthalmic Division, Hospital Umberto I, Venice, Italy; Visitor at: the Bristol Eye Bank, Bristol Eye Hospital, Bristol (UK), the Manchester Eye Bank, Manchester Royal Eye Hospital, Manchester (UK), the Cornea Bank, The Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute (The Netherlands). Lecturer in Ophthalmology, University of Padua, Italy, and he received a Fellowship in Ophthalmology granted by the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation, Ophthalmic Division, Hospital Umberto I, Venice, Italy.

He was Research Associate in Neuroimmunology, Dept. of Pathology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, U.S.A., and Research Associate in Immunology, Pathology Laboratory, ENEA C.R.E., Casaccia, Rome, Italy. Besides his involvement as Referee for several peer review journals (British Journal of Ophthalmology, European Journal of Ophthamology, Cornea, Journal of the American Medical Association, Expert Review of Ophthalmology, Case Reports in Ophthalmology, Clinical Ophthalmology, Regenerative Medicine, Current Medical Literature – Ophthalmology, Cell and Tissue Banking, Plos One, Journal of Current Ophthalmology) he is (co)author several papers in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and invited reviews.

​Andrea K. Gareiss-Lok, CEO, CEBT

Managing Director

Hornhautbank Muenchen gGmbH

Andrea K. Gareiss-Lok, CEO, CEBT, is the Managing Director for Hornhautbank Muenchen gGmbH in Munich, Germany. In 1984 she graduated from High School with subsequent training as a medical assistant and MTA. Working in medical laboratories including practice management in various medical specialties, she established and started in 1991 as the principal responsible MTA in the cornea bank Munich together with her Medical Director Prof. Thomas Neuhann. Andrea Gareiss-Lok is currently the only CEBT (certified eye bank technician) in Germany and was the first one in the EU after successful undertaking training in the USA in 1993. Since 2000 she is the Managing Director and Head of the Munich Eye Bank. Since 2002 she is actively working in national and international committees (e.g. EEBA, GAEBA) for the establishment of uniform national and international standards and thus better cooperation between cornea and tissue banks in Germany and Europe. As of 2010 she is also the certified TÜV-Quality Management Officer of the Eye Bank in Munich and also successfully completed technical training courses 1 & 2 for technical sterilization assistance in 2012 and 2013.

​Annika Hakamäki, PhD

Tissue Establishment Responsible Person and Development Manager

Annika Hakamäki, PhD, is the Tissue Establishment Responsible Person and Development Manager for Regea Cell and Tissue Center, Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, Tampere University, Finland. She obtained Master’s degree in Biochemistry from University of Turku, Finland, and PhD in Cell Biology, from University of Tampere. She has been working in Regea Cell and Tissue Center since 2003. In addition to tissue bank activities, she works as a production manager in a project manufacturing tissue engineered products from adipose tissue derived stem cells for the treatment of bone defects under the EU’s hospital exemption regulation. She also participates in University’s  projects developing stem cell based tissue engineered products. 

​Gary L.A. Jones, BSc (Econ)

International Relations Manager

The Veneto Eye Bank Foundation

Gary L.A. Jones, BSc (Econ), is the International Relations Manager for Fondazione Banca degli Occhi del Veneto Onlus (the Veneto Eye Bank Foundation) in Venice, Italy. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree from University College of Swansea (Wales) and spent his early career in the UK assisting academics and researchers obtain research funding, primarily from the European Commission in Brussels. In 2000 he relocated to Italy and began working for the Veneto Eye Bank, with special responsibility for managing the bank’s international collaborative links that now encompass 25 transplant centers in 15 countries. Since 2003 he has been the Executive Officer for the European Eye Bank Association and overseas the day-to-day workings of the EEBA Secretariat. He is a founding representative of the Global Alliance of Eye Bank Associations (GAEBA) and of the Common representation of SoHO’s Associations (CoRe SoHO).

Iva Dekaris, MD, PhD

Eye Surgeon

University Eye Hospital “Svjetlost” in Croatia (EU)

President of the European Eye Bank Association (EEBA), prof. Iva Dekaris, MD, PhD works as eye surgeon at the University Eye Hospital “Svjetlost” in Croatia (EU). She also acts as surgical instructor for the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) and European School for Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology (Swiss). She was the first surgeon in south-eastern Europe to start with lamellar corneal surgery and corneal limbal stem cell transplantation. 

​Nausica Otero Areitio

Manager

Eye Bank at Barcelona Tissue Bank

Nausica Otero Areitio, Biochemist, she is responsible for the management of the Eye Bank at Barcelona Tissue Bank (Blood and Tissue Bank), Spain. She obtained her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Basque Country after she relocated to Barcelona and began working for the Transplant Services Foundation at the Hospital Clinic of Barcelona in 2004. She spent her early career in training in transplant coordination and getting experience in Tissue Banking to determine the suitability for transplantation of human tissues with special responsibility for ocular tissue.  She has been teaching staff from the procurement of donor ocular tissues to the corneal quality evaluation and processing.  Since 2014 she is dedicated fully to the management of the Eye Bank at Barcelona Tissue Bank, working to give responses to the emergent needs of ophthalmologists by designing procedures to prepare ready-to-use tissues adapted to the final transplant indications. In 2018 she completed a master degree in “Transfusion Medicine and Advanced Cell Therapies” at UAB (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona). She is a long serving Member of the European Eye Bank Association.

​Wessel Vermeulen

Technician

ETB-BISLIFE Cornea Department in Beverwijk

Wessel Vermeulen: is a technician at ETB-BISLIFE Cornea Department in Beverwijk, the Netherlands. He started his working career in a Medical Hospital, where he got extensive experience in the field of medical microbiology for almost 20 years. In 2000 he made a switch to work as a technician in a corneabank.

The corneabank in Amsterdam was a good opportunity to learn all about corneas in organ culture from Liesbeth Pels and Yvonne Schuchard. Later on the corneabank moved to Beverwijk as a department of ETB-BISLIFE. Since 2013 he is involved with the preparation of posterior lamella with a microkeratome. In 2014 he participated in a wet lab training and didactic instruction for DMEK preparation at Lions Vision Gift in Portland. After that, he was involved with the project for implementing the pre-stripped DMEK technique in Beverwijk and to deliver these tissues to the transplantation centres.

Since 2014 Wessel is a participant of the EEBA Technical Special Interest Group. The work for that group has a lot to do with the technical guidelines of EEBA and with the EU directives. In 2018 he was voted onto the EEBA Committee as an elected Member. 

​Eva M. Martínez-Conesa, PhD

Director

Eye and Amniotic Membrane Bank for Barcelona Tissue Bank

Eva M. Martínez-Conesa, PhD, is the Head of the Eye and Amniotic Membrane Bank for Barcelona Tissue Bank (Banc de Sang i Teixits) in Barcelona, Spain. She studied Biology and completed her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology at University of Barcelona (Spain). She spent her early career in different public centers (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, CSIC) and private (pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries). In 2010, she began working for the Barcelona Tissue Bank, with special responsibility for corneas and amniotic membranes. She also performed the development and translation of cell therapy for the ocular surface by ex vivo amplification of progenitor cells from autologous sclerocorneal limbus using a clean room environment under GMP conditions. She is an active member of EEBA
