Corneal Tissue Processing Case Studies Discussion

Back to Package

Speakers present various case studies on corneal tissue processing, taking a deeper look into each case. The session highlights interesting cases and may include the process for preparing the tissue, the post-op follow-up information or investigations, and any unique aspects of the case.

Philip Dye

Lions VisionGift

Phil has worked at Lions VisionGift since 2008. During that time Phil has processed over 5000 grafts for Transplant. Phil has also been the lead processing trainer since 2015 and has trained many processing tech’s from Lions VisionGift as well as eye bankers and Doctors from all over the world. In his downtime he likes to enjoy time with his family and fly fishing.

Kelly Odell

Lions VisionGift

Kelly Odell has been a processing technician with Lions VisionGift since 2014. She routinely prepares corneal tissue grafts for sight restoration including; Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK), Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK), and Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (ALK) grafts. She has led multiple skills courses teaching the SCUBA technique of DMEK processing and Patient Ready DMEKTM preparation and evaluation.

Kelly Odell lectured at the 2019 Oregon Ophthalmological Alumni Association Technician’s conference and at the 2019 International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology conference. She was the recipient of the Jachin Misko Memorial Scholarship in 2015 and is the co-author on multiple papers featured in Cornea and the International Journal of Eye Banking. Kelly has a Bachelor of Science in Organismal Biology from Portland State University.

From 2012 until 2019 she was working as a Corneal surgeon, researcher and Head of Academy at the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (NIIOS) and the Melles Cornea Clinic Rotterdam. She specialized in lamellar transplantation techniques. Her main research focus and thesis is on endothelial keratoplasty, in particular on DMEK, DMEK modifications, graft survival and (prediction of) allograft rejection.

Jessica Lie, PhD

Jessica Lie is Medical Biologist / Research Scientist at Amnitrans Eye Bank Rotterdam, a division of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (NIIOS). Dr. Lie began her career at NIIOS in 2005. She manages the supply of tissue for corneal transplantations. Her main specialization is in the surgical preparation of bio-implants for advanced lamellar keratoplasty and tissue engineering. She has played a key role in developing novel corneal surgical techniques such as harvesting Descemets membrane for DMEK. She continues to explore new technologies. She regularly trains ophthalmologists from all around the world in advanced keratoplasty during NIIOS Wet lab courses.

Dr. Lie is a member of the European Eye Bank Association (EEBA) and the Dutch Ophthalmology Society (NOG).

Prior to joining the NIIOS, Dr. Lie earned a PhD from Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam in 2004 for her research on atherosclerosis by using transgenic mouse models. She holds a MSc degree in Medical Biology from Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (1996) and a BSc degree in Biochemistry from Hogeschool Amsterdam (1993).
