Fuch’s Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is a disorder that affects the cornea and is one of the leading indications for a corneal transplant. Almost a third of corneal transplants performed in the US are a result of the presence of FECD. Dr. Ula Jurkunas, Associate Director of Cornea Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, discusses the overall disease, her related research, the current treatment options and the work that is being done to create innovative therapies in the future.

Associate Professor of Ophthalmology
Mass Eye and Ear
Ula Jurkunas, MD is a clinician-scientist who performs corneal and refractive surgery at Mass Eye and Ear and conducts basic science research on Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy and stem cell transplantation at Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear. In addition to being one of the highest volume refractive and transplant surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear, she teaches residents and fellows about corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery as well as the clinical management and diagnosis of corneal and refractive conditions. Dr. Jurkunas is the Associate Director of the Cornea Service at Mass Eye and Ear and Co-Director of the Harvard Ophthalmology Cornea Center of Excellence.

During this session, Ieesha Johnson from the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT), discusses the importance of reaching out to minority community, resources available from AMAT, what is being done for National Minority Donor Awareness Month, and much more. Lauren Darensbourg from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) also discusses the new Donational Campaign and how eye banks can participate.

Teresa Ham joined the Advancing Sight Network team in 2002 and she currently serves as Chief Administrative Officer for the multi-state organization. Teresa brings both compassion and professionalism as she leads accounting, human resources, marketing, development and education for Advancing Sight Network. She also serves the donation community on a national level as chair of the EBAA Donor, Partner and Community Relations Committee and a member of the Donate Life America Advisory council where she serves as both state team liaison and EBAA liaison. Teresa serves as 2nd Team Leader for Donate Life Alabama where she passionately pursues organ, eye, and tissue donation education at the state level. Teresa earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Huntingdon College.

Lauren Darensbourg serves as Lead of the Donation Education Team in the Division of Transplantation at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this role, Lauren develops and coordinates public and professional education and outreach activities in support of HRSA’s mission to improve awareness about organ donation and transplantation, and to promote the need for increased donor registrations. Lauren earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, as well as a Master of Public Health from Florida A & M University.

Jennifer DeMatteo, MCM, CIC, is the Director of Regulations and Standards for the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). She oversees the EBAA Accreditation program, Medical Standards process and serves as their regulatory liaison. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Microbiology from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University). She was responsible for directing the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Employee Health programs and personnel in major tertiary hospital and ambulatory care settings. Ms. DeMatteo has been a Healthcare Epidemiologist for over 20 years and is certified in Infection Control & Epidemiology (CBIC).

Attend the informational session to learn about the recent outbreak and the available guidance for reducing the risk of transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis via tissue transplantation.
Melissa Greenwald, MD discusses the recent TB outbreak linked to contaminated bone allograft products containing live cells, resulting in spinal and disseminated tuberculosis in 77% of product recipients. As a member of the AATB Physician’s Council, she will discuss the review of the science and medical literature that led to the recent guidelines released by AATB for screening potential donors for MTB.
Attend the informational session to learn about the recent outbreak and the available guidance for reducing the risk of transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis via tissue transplantation.

Melissa Greenwald, MD

Melissa Greenwald, MD, FAST is an internationally recognized expert in tissue, cell, and organ safety and policy. Dr. Greenwald is a graduate of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine who spent 25 years on active duty in the US Public Health Service with over 14 years at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulating human tissues for transplantation. While at FDA, she became Chief of the Human Tissue and Reproduction branch, wrote all guidance documents related to tissue donor eligibility, and reviewed all the infectious disease assays used to test tissue, cell and organ donors. After leaving FDA in 2014, she spent four years at the Health Resources and Services Administration where she retired as the Director of the Division of Transplantation. Melissa now directs her own consulting business specializing in safety management and regulatory affairs for tissue, cell, and organ products, and serves as AATB's Chief Medical Officer.

Lorenzo Cervantes, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained specialist in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery at Connecticut Eye Specialists. A medical director serving on Eversight’s Medical Advisory Committee, he is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians, the New England Ophthalmological Society, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Cornea Society, the Paton Society, and the Eye Bank Association of America. Dr. Cervantes regularly teaches other surgeons advanced techniques in corneal transplantation and cataract surgery. He has authored several textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles. He received his medical degree, cum laude, from the Downstate Medical Center – College of Medicine at the State University of New York, and completed his residency at the North Shore/LIJ Health System in New York, where he also served as chief resident. He completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the Eye and Ear Institute of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Caithlin Lopes joined Eversight in 2013 and brings to the role more than 15 years of experience in the eye, organ and tissue field. Caithlin leads Eversight’s domestic partner relations efforts, guiding her team to forge relationships with surgeons that allow Eversight to continue to make vision a reality for patients across the country. She also works collaboratively with organizations like the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Cornea Society as partners in education and training for surgeons, fellows and residents. Prior to Eversight, Caithlin served in various roles at the New England Organ Bank. She holds a bachelor’s degree in theology with a minor in natural sciences from Loyola University of Maryland.

Darrell Lee, CEBT, is a Laboratory & Processing Manager for Lions Eye Bank of West Central Ohio. He has worked for the eye bank for over 13 years, initially starting off as an eye tissue recovery technician. Darrell’s has BS in Chemistry and is a CEBT. Along with being a tissue coordinator, he is responsible for the processing of corneal tissue at LEBWCO.
