Attend this session to learn more about wet labs and how to host them for your surgeons!
Wet labs and surgical skills training sessions are essential in a corneal surgeon’s training and eye banks are in a unique position to help make them happen. Caithlin Lopes, Director of Business Development at Eversight, and Darrell Lee, Tissue Processing Manager at Lions Eye Bank of West Central Ohio, discuss the wet labs and surgical skills trainings that they host, the reason and goal for hosting these sessions, how to host a virtual and in person sessions, and where to look for assistance with materials and funding. Dr. Lorenzo Cervantes, provides the physician and Medical Director perspective, highlighting the importance of hands-on training for surgeons and discussing his role in planning and facilitating wet labs.

Lorenzo Cervantes, MD
Medical Director
Eversight
Lorenzo Cervantes, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and a fellowship-trained specialist in cornea, external disease, cataract and refractive surgery at Connecticut Eye Specialists. A medical director serving on Eversight’s Medical Advisory Committee, he is a Fellow of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons, the Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians, the New England Ophthalmological Society, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Cornea Society, the Paton Society, and the Eye Bank Association of America. Dr. Cervantes regularly teaches other surgeons advanced techniques in corneal transplantation and cataract surgery. He has authored several textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles. He received his medical degree, cum laude, from the Downstate Medical Center – College of Medicine at the State University of New York, and completed his residency at the North Shore/LIJ Health System in New York, where he also served as chief resident. He completed a fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the Eye and Ear Institute of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
Caithlin Lopes
Director, Partner Development
Eversight
Caithlin Lopes joined Eversight in 2013 and brings to the role more than 15 years of experience in the eye, organ and tissue field. Caithlin leads Eversight’s domestic partner relations efforts, guiding her team to forge relationships with surgeons that allow Eversight to continue to make vision a reality for patients across the country. She also works collaboratively with organizations like the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Cornea Society as partners in education and training for surgeons, fellows and residents. Prior to Eversight, Caithlin served in various roles at the New England Organ Bank. She holds a bachelor’s degree in theology with a minor in natural sciences from Loyola University of Maryland.
Darrell Lee, CEBT
Laboratory & Processing Manager
Lions Eye Bank of West Central Ohio
Darrell Lee, CEBT, is a Laboratory & Processing Manager for Lions Eye Bank of West Central Ohio. He has worked for the eye bank for over 13 years, initially starting off as an eye tissue recovery technician. Darrell’s has BS in Chemistry and is a CEBT. Along with being a tissue coordinator, he is responsible for the processing of corneal tissue at LEBWCO.

Exploring different partnership opportunities provides eye banks with a variety of avenues to promote their mission. This webinar features speakers from three eye banks who will discuss working with Lions Clubs, fraternities and sororities, and a DLA state team to staff a DMV ambassador program. Additionally, Heather Butterfield will provide an update about the DLA DMV Committee and an overview of what they do and how eye banks can work with the DMV to promote donation and register new donors.

Drew Timmons
Tissue Donation Screening & Education Supervisor
UT Southwestern Transplant Services Center Lions Eye Bank
Drew Timmons, CTBS, is the Tissue Donation Screening & Education Supervisor at UT Southwestern Transplant Services Center Lions Eye Bank. While serving as an enlisted aircrew member in the Air Force, Drew became interested in health care after flying a medical evacuation mission from Canada to the United States. Once he left the military, this interest intensified while his wife was dealing with health issues which led to the decision to attend nursing school. After graduation, Drew went to work in a surgical intensive care unit where he worked on numerous organ donor cases. Several years later he joined the Louisiana Organ Procurement Agency as an organ recovery coordinator, later becoming a regional manager. In 1999, Drew moved to Dallas where he began working at Transplant Services Center UT Southwestern Medical Center in a dual role coordinating recoveries and performing hospital development. Currently, Drew oversees the Eye & Tissue Call Center as well as the Outreach team which works with hospitals to facilitate the donation process. In addition, the team performs public education to promote donation. An award-winning photographer, Drew enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandchildren.

Patty Stockdale currently serves as Partner & Community Relations Manager at Lions Gift of Sight, and on the EBAA Donor, Partner & Community Relations Committee. She has been a friend of the eye bank since 2007, volunteering in a variety of roles prior to joining the staff in 2015. Patty holds a degree in Business Management and has a diverse background in business.

Maria Chelko has fifteen years of experience as an educator in hospital, community, and academic settings. Since joining The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration in 2017, she has served in many positions including Family Support Coordinator and Hospital and Community Liaison. She is currently Communications Manager. Throughout her career in eye banking, she has been dedicated to improving eye donation outcomes and fostering a positive culture of donation in the New York City area through public and professional education and donor family outreach. Maria holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Penn State University and a master’s in Writing from The University of New Hampshire
Heather Butterfield
Director of Strategic Communications
Iowa Donor Network
Heather Butterfield is Director of Strategic Communications at Iowa Donor Network, Iowa’s only nonprofit organ and tissue recovery agency. Part of her role is serving as liaison to the Iowa Department of Transportation and the state’s 99 DMV offices. Heather currently serves as chair of Donate Life America’s DMV Committee. Donation is a cause near to Heather’s heart; in 2012 her 20-year-old little sister Kayte Mosher passed away and became a tissue and cornea donor. Kayte’s gifts helped more than 300 people and inspired Heather to leave her career in broadcast journalism. Heather has been with Iowa Donor Network since 2015.

In eye, tissue and organ donation, understanding the basics of infection and infectious diseases is essential in preventing the transmission and spread of diseases. Dr. Beverly Forsyth discusses infectious diseases providing an overview, detailing the difference between viral and bacterial infections and highlighting the diseases that eye bank professionals need to be aware of regarding donation. The session includes information about the basics of infection, emerging diseases, and what eye bank professionals need to know when determining donor eligibility and tissue suitability. Beverly Forsyth, MD
Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
Beverly Forsyth, MD, has a dual appointment at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai as Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases and the Department of Medical Education. She has an BA from Cornell University, College of Arts and Sciences, and received her medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Dr. Forsyth completed her Internal Medicine residency at Montefiore Medical Center at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She completed her Infectious Diseases Fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. At Mount Sinai, she is a clinician-educator and she combines a clinical HIV practice with teaching and participation in scholarly work in medical education. She is also the Director of Education Infection Prevention and Emergency Management for the medical and graduate programs. Dr. Forsyth currently serves as a member of the Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration's Medical Advisory Board and is on the Editorial Board for the EBAA Journal, Eye Banking and Corneal Transplantation.

Mark Greiner

Iowa Lions Eye Bank
Mark A. Greiner, MD, is the Robert and Joell Brightfelt Professor of Cornea Research in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Science at the University of Iowa, where he directs the Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery service and fellowship program. Dr. Greiner is the Medical Director of the Iowa Lions Eye Bank, and has served in various leadership roles within eye banking including on the Eye Bank Association of America’s Board of Directors and Research Committee. Additionally, he is a clinician-scientist with a translational research laboratory based at Iowa Lions Eye Bank.
After earning his undergraduate degree in English with High Honors from the University of California at Berkeley, he received his medical degree and completed both internship and residency in Ophthalmology at the University of California at Davis. After completing fellowship training in Cornea and External Diseases at Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon with Dr. Mark Terry and Michael Straiko, he joined the faculty at the University of Iowa in 2012. In addition to his longstanding interests in endothelial keratoplasty and resident medical education, Dr. Greiner’s current focus is on mitochondrial biology and cellular metabolism, diabetes mellitus, and Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy.
