Members discuss different cultural challenges and opportunities regarding donation and ways to overcome them. Learn from the lived experiences from your colleagues in eye banking, and engage in open discourse to improve cultural understanding relating to donation and beyond. 

    EBAA Community Chats are member-driven discussions on topics of importance and relevance to the eye banking community. The chats are held on the Zoom Meetings platform and provide members with the opportunity to ask questions of the community and share experiences and insights.  All EBAA Members are invited to join and are encouraged to participate in the discussion.

    Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty continues to be a preferred procedure for many surgeons and eye banks have risen to the challenge of preparing tissue for this procedure. Speakers discuss the basics of preparing corneal tissue for DSAEK and highlight various methods for preparing the tissue as well as the different materials and equipment that are used. The presentation includes videos of the procedure and discussion with the speakers about their experiences with DSAEK tissue preparation. 

    Participants will learn:

    • How DSAEK differs from other transplant options 
    • The procedure for preparing tissue for DSAEK
    • The regulations and standards that apply to DSAEK tissue preparation
    • Various modifications and methods that are used based on surgeon preferences

    Paul Graves, CEBT, CTBS, was born and raised in Alabama. He joined Advancing Sight Network in July of 1997 as a Transplant Coordinator. Over the years, he has been involved in all aspects of clinical eye banking, from Laboratory Manager to Director of Laboratory Services. Today, as the Senior Vice President of Clinical Services, Paul oversees the clinical processing aspects of Advancing Sight Network, from performing tissue processing itself to developing new processing procedures to assist surgeons in the care of their patients. Paul is a Certified Eye Bank Technician and a Certified Tissue Banking Specialist. Paul currently serves on the EBAA Technician Education Committee.

    Chelsea Green, CEBT

    Chelsea Green, CEBT, is the Processing Services Manager for Iowa Lions Eye Bank. Chelsea received a BA in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies as well as a BS in Clinical Psychology from the University of Illinois. She came to the University of Iowa in 2011 to work in medical research and worked on multiple studies before finding her way into eye banking and earning her CEBT. She has been head of the processing department at Iowa Lions Eye Bank since 2018.

    Chelsea is a member of the EBAA Technician Education Committee, the EBAA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee, multiple DEI committees at the University of Iowa, and founded the DEI Committee at Iowa Lions Eye Bank.

    Nicholas Hicks, CEBT, is the Director of Tissue Processing at Eversight. He has been with Eversight for over 11 years, 9 of which have been focused on processing tissue. Nick currently serves on the EBAA Technician Education Committee. 

    Ingrid Schunder, MBA, CEBT (Moderator)

    Ingrid Schunder, MBA, CEBT, began a career in ocular transplantation in 1999 at the Lone Star Lions Eye Bank in Austin, Texas.  During her 13 years there, she performed all aspects of eye banking in her role as Technical Director. Ingrid accepted a position with North Carolina Eye Bank in 2013 as the Supervisor of Recovery Services. In 2016, she earned her MBA in leadership and was promoted to the Vice President of Donor Logistics after the acquisition of ocular recovery services in South Carolina.  Ingrid was responsible for the day-to-day logistical operations of the donor recovery process, hospital development, Medical Examiner and Coroner relationships in North and South Carolina. In 2020, Ingrid led the project for the acquisition of the Lone Star Eye Bank, now Miracles In Sight, Lone Star Division. In June of 2022, Ingrid was promoted to President & CEO of Miracles In Sight. 

    Ingrid is an active member in the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) and serves as chair of the Technician Education Committee, EBAA Medical Advisory Board and Certification Board.

    Ingrid served in the United States Army, HHC, 2AD as the Commanding General’s Attendant. Prior to her career in eye banking, she taught high school Spanish and English.

    EBAA Town Hall meetings are held throughout the year to share information with the members about the Board’s activity and to solicit member feedback and perspectives on the issues facing the profession. The Spring Town Hall meeting features Board of Director candidate speeches and any proposed Bylaws changes, allowing House of Delegate members the opportunity to hear speeches and proposed changes before the Annual Meeting. Prior to working in Eye Banking, Jerry was a Fire Chaplain and Executive Director at FirefighterAid. He has 15 years of experience in eye banking across various disciplines, having worked in Recovery, Quality, Hospital Development, and Donor Eligibility.

    Vivian Lopez has a BS in Biology and is the QA Director for the Beauty of Sight Eye Bank, located at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami Florida. She has more than 30 years of combined experience in quality control operations, research and development, data analysis, equipment qualifications, process validations and establishing quality management systems. She has worked in different FDA regulated industries such as Biotechnology, Diagnostics, Medical Device and in Eye Banking for the past 14 years.

Elizabeth received her Master of Science in healthcare administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Elizabeth holds certifications with the American Society of Quality, American Society of Clinical Pathologist, and Lean Six Sigma as a Green Belt. She has served as both lead and general auditor for CAP and AABB and is a current member of American College of Healthcare Executives.

    Brian Philippy, BCHE, BS, CEBT, works for Lions Gift of Sight in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Brian started eye banking in 1997 at the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank (now Lions Gift of Sight), beginning as a Lab Attendant, then Procurement Technician, Distribution Coordinator, Donor Coordinator, then Lab Manager. In 2005, Brian became the Technical & Quality Assurance Director in Norfolk, then later the Director of Transplant & Research. Brian also served as a Consultant and Director at Vision Share, concurrent with time served in Norfolk. Earning CEBT in 2003, Brian began an extensive EBAA committee service history in 2006.

    Jennifer DeMatteo, MCM, CIC (Moderator)

    Jennifer DeMatteo, MCM, CIC, is the Director of Regulations and Standards for the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). She oversees the EBAA Accreditation program, Medical Standards process and serves as their regulatory liaison. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Master of Science degree in Clinical Microbiology from Hahnemann University (now Drexel University). She was responsible for directing the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) and Employee Health programs and personnel in major tertiary hospital and ambulatory care settings. Ms. DeMatteo has been a Healthcare Epidemiologist for over 20 years and is certified in Infection Control & Epidemiology (CBIC).

  • Cultivating Your Funeral Home and Coroner Relationships

    Developing relationships with funeral homes and coroners is a necessity for eye banks to be able to recover tissue. During this session, Gary Watts, retired coroner who has investigated more than 50,000 deaths over more than 40 years, discusses the protocol that he helped to develop to improve the relationship tissue procurement organizations had with coroners. Staci Terrin from Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank will also discuss the efforts her team makes to strengthen their relationships with funeral homes and coroners.

    Staci Terrin

    Staci joined the Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank in December 2014. Staci has held several positions at RMLEB and is currently the Technical Manager, which she has served in this position for the past four years. Staci has trained surgeons and eye bank technicians in processing tissue for DMEK and DSAEK.  Staci has served on several EBAA committees, including Constitution and Bylaws and Continuing Education.  She has co-authored several scientific publications on behalf of RMLEB relating to eye banking. What Staci enjoys most about her position is teaching and training staff and watching them grow as eye bank professionals.

    Gary Watts has spent 40+ years in law enforcement focused in medical legal death investigation. He is a past president and board member of South Carolina's Coroners Association, and also a past president and board chair of the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners, or IACME. He is currently the coroner liaison for Sharing Hopes Carolina, an Organ Procurement Organization (OPO).

Shawn Sandford, Management Executive and DEI Practitioner, provides information about how and where to begin, highlighting areas where DEI practices can be implemented at all levels of an organization. Representatives from three different eye banks share how their organizations have cultivated a more diverse, equitable and inclusive environment and discuss the various programs, initiatives and practices that have been implemented.

    Mike Tramber, MBA, CEBT, CETB (Moderator)

    As Vice President of Operations, Mike is responsible for developing long-term strategies, creating lean and efficient operational processes, improving customer relationships and monitoring the successes of each operational department.


    Mike started his career in the organ, tissue and eye donation industry more than 20 years ago as a recovery technician, where his skills and attention to detail helped him routinely win the coveted Technician of the Month award. His calm demeanor, excellent interpersonal skills and industry knowledge make him an outstanding and successful leader. He later moved to Carolina Donor Services as Tissue Recovery Manager where he led the department to win the Golden Quill and Golden Scalpel Awards for minimal errors in both documentation and surgical technique. Mike came to Miracles In Sight in 2006, where he quickly was able to use his skills to forge many process and procedural improvements and lead the company to become one of the top eye banks in the world. Mike is an advocate for donation. He is active on multiple EBAA committees, leads technician education trainings, and lectures on eye banking domestically and abroad.


    After graduating high school, Mike enlisted in the US Army as a laboratory technician and worked towards completing a diploma in surgical technology. He received his Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration from Mt. Olive College and his Master of Business Administration from Winston-Salem State University.

    Shawn Sanford, CAE

    Shawn Sanford, CAE is an experienced membership engagement strategist who specializes in supporting associations in building and executing diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies.


    Shawn currently serves as the Head of Membership and Community Engagement at CLOC, a small association of 8,000 members where she leads membership recruitment and retention strategy and has implemented a diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging strategy for the organization. Separately, Shawn supports other associations in developing and launching a comprehensive diversity, equity, and inclusion strategy. Prior to CLOC, Shawn led membership and diversity, equity and inclusion strategic initiatives and planning at the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) and has supported members in industries such as legal, IT professionals, education and healthcare.


    Shawn is a Certified Association Executive (CAE) and a certified DEI practitioner. Shawn is the grateful recipient of the Association Forum’s 2021 Welcoming Environment Award and the 2021 Forty Under 40 Award. She is also an active volunteer at the Association Forum and the Association of Society Association Executives (ASAE).


    Shawn is a proud alumna of the University of Notre Dame and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Saint Francis. She currently resides in the Chicagoland area with her daughter. 

    Alyssa Hernandez

    Alyssa began her career in eye banking in 2020 at Sierra Donor Services Eye Bank. As the Director of Marketing and Development, she implements and executes branding and business development growth strategies along with executing marketing campaigns. Within her first year, she helped create a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee with the goal of educating all team members and ensuring they felt included and heard. She is also member of the EBAA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee. 


    Alyssa resides in Sacramento, CA with her husband and 3 young boys. She dedicates her passion for organ, eye and tissue donation to her son who is a liver transplant recipient. 

    Haidre Williams

    Haidre Williams is a Quality Program Specialist at VisionGift in Portland, OR, and co-founded the VisionGift Women’s Affinity Group (WAG). While at Portland State University, she volunteered and did paid work with the Women’s Resource Center, supervising their annual mentorship program as well as facilitating weekly group meetings for women returning to college. She uses this experience, her background in women’s studies, and her own lived experience as a woman of color to hold space for important and relevant DEI conversations in the Women’s Affinity Group and the EBAA DEI committee

    Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is a disorder that affects the cornea and is one of the leading indications for a corneal transplant. Almost a third of corneal transplants performed in the US are a result of the presence of FECD.  Dr. Ula Jurkunas, Associate Director of Cornea Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, discusses the overall disease, her related research, the current treatment options and the work that is being done to create innovative therapies in the future.

    Ula Jurkunas, MD

    Associate Professor of Ophthalmology

    Mass Eye and Ear

    Ula Jurkunas, MD is a clinician-scientist who performs corneal and refractive surgery at Mass Eye and Ear and conducts basic science research on Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy and stem cell transplantation at Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear. In addition to being one of the highest volume refractive and transplant surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear, she teaches residents and fellows about corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery as well as the clinical management and diagnosis of corneal and refractive conditions. Dr. Jurkunas is the Associate Director of the Cornea Service at Mass Eye and Ear and Co-Director of the Harvard Ophthalmology Cornea Center of Excellence.
