Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty continues to be a preferred procedure for many surgeons and eye banks have risen to the challenge of preparing tissue for this procedure. Speakers discuss the basics of preparing corneal tissue for DSAEK and highlight various methods for preparing the tissue as well as the different materials and equipment that are used. The presentation includes videos of the procedure and discussion with the speakers about their experiences with DSAEK tissue preparation.

Advancing Sight Network
Paul Graves, CEBT, CTBS, was born and raised in Alabama. He joined Advancing Sight Network in July of 1997 as a Transplant Coordinator. Over the years, he has been involved in all aspects of clinical eye banking, from Laboratory Manager to Director of Laboratory Services. Today, as the Senior Vice President of Clinical Services, Paul oversees the clinical processing aspects of Advancing Sight Network, from performing tissue processing itself to developing new processing procedures to assist surgeons in the care of their patients. Paul is a Certified Eye Bank Technician and a Certified Tissue Banking Specialist. Paul currently serves on the EBAA Technician Education Committee.

Chelsea Green, CEBT, is the Processing Services Manager for the Iowa Lions Eye Bank. Chelsea received both a BA and BS with a focus in research from the University of Illinois Chicago. She came to the University of Iowa in 2011 to work in medical research and worked on multiple studies before finding her way into eye banking and earning her CEBT. She currently oversees the processing department at Iowa Lions Eye Bank. Chelsea is a member of the EBAA Technician Education Committee.

The Spring Town Hall meeting features Board of Director candidate speeches and any proposed Bylaws changes, allowing House of Delegate members the opportunity to hear speeches and proposed changes before the Annual Meeting. Brian Philippy, BCHE, BS, CEBT, works for Lions Gift of Sight in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Brian started eye banking in 1997 at the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank (now Lions Gift of Sight), beginning as a Lab Attendant, then Procurement Technician, Distribution Coordinator, Donor Coordinator, then Lab Manager. In 2005, Brian became the Technical & Quality Assurance Director in Norfolk, then later the Director of Transplant & Research. Brian also served as a Consultant and Director at Vision Share, concurrent with time served in Norfolk. Earning CEBT in 2003, Brian began an extensive EBAA committee service history in 2006.

Developing relationships with funeral homes and coroners is a necessity for eye banks to be able to recover tissue. During this session, Gary Watts, retired coroner who has investigated more than 50,000 deaths over more than 40 years, discusses the protocol that he helped to develop to improve the relationship tissue procurement organizations had with coroners. Staci Terrin from Rocky Mountain Lions Eye Bank will also discuss the efforts her team makes to strengthen their relationships with funeral homes and coroners.

Attend this session to learn about Fuch’s Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy and the future treatment of the disease!
Fuch’s Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is a disorder that affects the cornea and is one of the leading indications for a corneal transplant. Almost a third of corneal transplants performed in the US are a result of the presence of FECD. Dr. Ula Jurkunas, Associate Director of Cornea Service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, discusses the overall disease, her related research, the current treatment options and the work that is being done to create innovative therapies in the future.

Ula Jurkunas, MD
Associate Professor of Ophthalmology
Mass Eye and Ear
Ula Jurkunas, MD is a clinician-scientist who performs corneal and refractive surgery at Mass Eye and Ear and conducts basic science research on Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy and stem cell transplantation at Schepens Eye Research Institute of Mass Eye and Ear. In addition to being one of the highest volume refractive and transplant surgeons at Mass Eye and Ear, she teaches residents and fellows about corneal, cataract, and refractive surgery as well as the clinical management and diagnosis of corneal and refractive conditions. Dr. Jurkunas is the Associate Director of the Cornea Service at Mass Eye and Ear and Co-Director of the Harvard Ophthalmology Cornea Center of Excellence.

During this session, Ieesha Johnson from the Association for Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation (AMAT), discusses the importance of reaching out to minority community, resources available from AMAT, what is being done for National Minority Donor Awareness Month, and much more. Lauren Darensbourg from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) also discusses the new Donational Campaign and how eye banks can participate.

Ieesha Johnson
Director of Community Outreach
Infinite Legacy
Ieesha Johnson began her career at OneLegacy, the organ procurement organization in Los Angeles, California; first as a hospital services coordinator for the organization, and eventually serving as in-house coordinator at one of the largest trauma centers in Los Angeles. She then joined Infinite Legacy as a hospital services coordinator in 2010 and joined the community outreach department in 2014 where she eventually became the director of community outreach in 2021. As the director for the team, she works to increase awareness of the need for organ, eye and tissue donation throughout Maryland. Ieesha is the founder of Infinite Legacy's "The Decision Project", a grassroots initiative that empowers socially disadvantaged communities that are affected by donation and transplantation to make an educated and inspired decision about donation.
Ieesha is an active member of the American Public Health Association, The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People where she holds the position of Health Chair for the Maryland State Conference. Ieesha is a volunteer for the Maryland Medical Reserve Corps, she also serves as Subject Matter Expert for the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) Impact committee, and a DEI committee member on AOPO. Ieesha formerly served as Chair of the Public Education and Public Relations Council at AOPO. She currently serves as an Expert Panelist for The Division of Transplantation (DoT) within the Department of Health and Human Services Donation Education and Outreach Team, she serves on the Advisory Council of Donate Life America and is the President-Elect for the Association of Multicultural Affairs in Transplantation.
Ieesha holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies from the California State University of Long Beach in Long Beach, California, and a Master of Science in Leadership and Management from La Verne University in La Verne, California.

Lauren Darensbourg serves as Lead of the Donation Education Team in the Division of Transplantation at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. In this role, Lauren develops and coordinates public and professional education and outreach activities in support of HRSA’s mission to improve awareness about organ donation and transplantation, and to promote the need for increased donor registrations. Lauren earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry, as well as a Master of Public Health from Florida A & M University.

Jerilyn Giardina joined AltruVision, formerly known as Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley (LEBDV), in 2014. She oversees the community relations, development, and family services programs. Some of Jerilyn’s favorite contributions to the eye bank’s mission include launching the Recipient Kit Program, hosting events that engage with cornea transplant recipients and donor families, and most recently publishing the Heartfelt Collection of Letters for donor families. She has also completed her Master's Degree in Nonprofit Leadership at LaSalle University.

Joshua Hou, MD, is an Associate Professor and the Lyon Chair of Ophthalmology in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences at the University of Minnesota. He received a BS in Chemistry from Duke University (Durham, NC), where he graduated summa cum laude. He received his MD from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine (St. Louis, MO). He then completed an ophthalmology residency and a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the University of Illinois Eye & Ear Infirmary. Dr. Hou currently serves as the Cornea Fellowship Director at the University of Minnesota and maintains a busy tertiary referral practice specialized in complex corneal transplantation and severe ocular surface disease. He is currently the Medical Director of the Lions Gift of Sight Eye Bank, serves as Chair of the EBAA Scientific Programs Committee, and is an Associate Editor of the Eye Banking and Corneal Transplantation Journal. He leads an NIH funded laboratory at the University of Minnesota and his research interests include eye banking, tissue processing, and limbal stem cell deficiency.
